Looking for land to help the homeless

Our container home project has gathered pace in the last few weeks, thanks to generous donations of time and labour, and now we need some land as the last piece of the jigsaw.

Vulnerable Citizen Support is building a home out of a donated shipping container, which will provide self-contained living space for a homeless person for six months to a year.

During that time, VCS will provide employability training, support looking for jobs, or referrals and liaison with other agencies that can help with a permanent housing solution.

Ultimately, we would like to to have ten or more container homes, building a community and making a real difference to the homelessness crisis in Leeds. But we still need suitable land  to house the project  – the first home is ready thanks to some fantastic help from local tradesmen and could be occupied as soon as we have a site.

We’ve also launched a petition to try and get endorsement from Leeds City Council for our project. We approached the council for a letter of support for the container homes for a funding bid but their stance is that there is adequate provision for rough sleepers in the city. We disagree – through our work, we can see that there are many rough sleepers with complex needs who would benefit immensely from this project.

If you would like to show your support, you can view and sign the petition here –

If you can help us with land to lease or buy, or know someone who can, please get in touch. We have seen a couple of plots that may be suitable and would probably cost around £1100 per month – if you’re a local business who would like to sponsor us to fund land rental, please contact us.
